St George’s Bloomsbury is the last of Hawksmoor’s six great London churches. As part of the recent restoration programme Luke Hughes and Company were asked to design seating to replace the Victorian pews. We supplied 40 stacking pews in European oak enabling the church to promote a wide variety of activities within its walls and play a central role in the regeneration of Bloomsbury; school and community programmes, exhibitons, concert series, public guided tours, events, talks and family activities are scheduled throughout the week.
The restoration programme was primarily funded through the contributions of The Paul Mellon Foundation (World Monuments Fund in Britain) and the Heritage Lottery Fund. The new pew benches were also funded by public subscription through the sale of commemorative brass discs which were inlaid into the benches.
