As part of an on-going refurbishment of Edinburgh's St Giles' Cathedral a new holy table was commissioned for the sanctuary in 2007. Early proposals by Luke Hughes and Company for a monolithic marble solution were approved and Luke Hughes spent the next few months seeking out likely sources of marble. His search led him from the long defunct marble workings on Iona to Carrara in Italy where he finally found marble of sufficient size and quality to realise the plan.
