LUKE HUGHES & COMPANY SPONSORS ONE OF JULIUS DRAKE'S TEMPLE SERIES OF CONCERTS AT THE MIDDLE TEMPLE
Amanda Roocroft soprano
Songs by Tchaikovsky and Rachmaninov
The Temple, in the heart of London, is a beautiful, serene and even secret place. Lying peacefully between two of London's busiest thoroughfares, Fleet Street and the Embankment, the Temple's gardens, courtyards, ancient buildings and historic Temple Church is a place that is treasured by those who know it and astonishes those who find it for the first time.
Julius Drake, artistic director of the Temple Song Series, was captivated by Middle Temple Hall, the Temple Church, Inner Temple Gardens and all the surroundings and buildings which make up the Temple. The germ of an idea that such a place would make performances of song and chamber music a particularly special experience encouraged him to plan and deliver this outstanding series of concerts.
Julius Drake writes:
In this our second Temple Song series, a number of the finest recitalists in the world, including:
Philip Langridge, Jonathan Lemalu, Mark Padmore, Amanda Roocroft, Christianne Stotijn and Sir Willard White, are joining me between January and June for a series of concerts in the glorious Elizabethen Hall of Middle Temple, off Fleet Street.
This series includes performances of Schubert's great cycles Die schöne Müllerin and Schwanengesang (Mark Padmore, 24 April and Jonathan Lemalu, 19 June), a performance of the complete Des Knaben Wunderhorn of Mahler (Christianne Stotijn and Stefan Loges, 10 May), an evening of Tchaikovsky and Rachmaninov (Amanda Roocroft, 21 May), of Britten and Schubert (Philip Langridge and Iestyn Davies, 16 January), of British and American song (Sir Willard White, 6 March) and, to celebrate St Valentine's Day on 14 February, a gala performance of Brahms' Liebeslieder Waltzes (Ailish Tynan, Christine Rice, James Gilchrist and Christopher Maltman).
Great music and great performers - I do hope you will be able to join us.
