Dyson Centre for Engineering Design

academic

The new Dyson Centre for Engineering Design at the University of Cambridge’s industry leading Department for Engineering brings together a re-modelled workshop, Bio-Robotics Laboratory and open plan space for undergraduate activities and events. Luke Hughes® was commissioned to design and install bespoke furniture for the workshop, Bio-Robotics lab, library and its connecting bridge.

For both the workshop and adjoining student area we designed workstations running either side of the room with tool boards and both fixed and moveable storage units. In addition we installed secured shuttered-storage units, individual engineering stations, shelving and desking. The often intense working nature of the furniture, designed to withstand heavy-duty equipment and use, led us to a more stripped back aesthetic, making a feature of the birch and phenolic ply construction and brushed stainless steel skeleton.

In addition we designed a reception desk and passageway desking for the library and phenolic ply benches and stools for the new connecting bridge.
