Westminster Abbey Song School

ecclesiastical

Three years after installing boy’s and girl’s song schools at Exeter Cathedral, this month we have installed a new song school at Westminster Abbey.

Housed within Dean’s Yard, Westminster, a large gated quadrangle surrounded by the remains of the former monastery of Westminster, the song school will provide the Abbey choristers with facilities to rehearse and explore the landmark’s rich musical heritage.

The new song school comprises both group and individual stalls crafted in solid European Oak, designed with an sloped music stand, bookstop and pencil ledge with two storage shelves underneath for folders and sheet music. Accompanying backless rehearsal benches are constructed with traditional through-tenons with a contrasting rosewood wedge. Together they form two concentric arcs around the central grand piano. Tapered music steps were designed to allow younger choristers to have a clear view of their music and maintain sight lines to the piano. Music storage cupboards line the walls to provide space for the choir’s vast musical repertoire, and the room is finished with two of our signature Sheffield benches for visitors to sit and observe rehearsals.
